Famous Wheelchair Users Through Out History

Wheelchairs and scooters allow disabled individuals to to be mobile. Wheelchairs have been used by some pretty prominent members in society. Here are a few of those famous people.
F.D. Roosevelt - F.D. Roosevelt was our 32nd President. He fell ill in 1921 and became permanently paralyzed. He did not give up on walking, however, and used his upper body strength to swivel his legs so he could walk with the help of iron braces. He used the iron braces in public, but used a chair while in private.
Christopher Reeve - Reeve is most well known for his role as the handsome superhero Superman. Tragedy struck this athletic actor when in 1995 he had an accident during an equestrian competition that left him paralyzed. He had to rely on a mobile chair for the rest of his life.
Stephen Hawking - Professor Stephen Hawking is a well known individual who has suffered for more than 40 years with motor neuron disease (MND). He is an internationally renowned Physicist that was diagnosed with the disease at the age of 21. He has outdone every expectation, living well past the 2 years he was predicted to live.
Joni Eareckson Tada - Joni is a famous evangelical Christian author and radio host. Due to a driving accident in 1967, Tada became a quadriplegic and was unable to move her hands or legs. Tada wrote about her experiences with hopes of accelerating Christian ministry in the disability community.
Itzhak Periman - Periman contracted polio when he was four years old. While he was able to recover, it left him with the ability to walk only with the aid of his crutches. Periman is one of the most distinguished violinists to date. He uses a wheelchair when he plays his violins.
Teddy Pendergrass - Theodore DeReese Pengergrass, Sr. was a famous musician in the Cadillacs. He was involved in a car accident in 1982 that left him paralyzed from the waste down. He needed the use of his mobile chair from there on out.
Tanni Grey Thompson - Thompson is the easiest athletes to recognize in a paralympics. She is a very prominent wheelchair athlete. She has won fourteen paralympic medals, with nine of them being gold.
