Automatic Knives - A Popular Choice
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Knife collecting is a passion for many individuals, and the different brands and styles of knives can make for an extensive collection. Different styles include spring assisted, butterfly, and automatic knives. Each one is unique, but the automatic knives are perhaps the most popular style currently. Also known as switchblades, the auto knife has a blade that springs out from the handle through a release mechanism, like a button or lever, found on the handle.
Automatic knives have come a long way from the early bayonet models that date back to the 1700's. Today, there are two basic types of switchblades, side-opening and out-of-the-front (OTF). The side-opening knives have a similar release mechanism similar to that of an ordinary folding in that the blade pivots from one side of the handle. On the other hand, the blade of an OTF knife spring out from the tip of the knife handle. Some OTF's are dual or double action, meaning the blade will retract by using the same mechanism that extracts the blade.
In both styles of automatic knives, it is the spring within the knife that enables the automatic feature. Extensive use of a switchblade may result in the spring needing to be replaced. The quality of the spring is as important as the quality of the knife itself. As with the repair of anything, collectors who are not well-versed and the repair of knives should take their knives to a professional for the replacement of a spring.
The uses for automatic knives are endless. Many professionals, such as police, firemen, and paramedics, use switchblades for many different applications. Perhaps the most popular use for this type of blade is hunting. Many blades are partially serrated, expanding the usefulness even more.
The variety of auto knives and accessories available are also endless. Smaller, pocket sized knives might be the most popular choice, as they are so easy to carry. Of course, many knives come with a clip-on case for those who want a knife that is more accessible than their pocket. Some double-action autos can also function as a manual blade. The handles of these knives also comes in many different styles, ranging from basic acrylic to decorative rosewood.
It is important to research the laws regarding automatic knives in various states. Though it's legal in many states, there are restrictions in many of these states. A concealed knife is commonly not allowed. Many states that have outlawed automatic knives do make exceptions for collectors.
