Woodworking has long been a favorite hobby. But as with any hobby, it is best to start out with the right equipment. Here are some essential woodworking tools you should have.
Of course, you should have the basic tools to get your hobby started off right. These include the obvious: hammer, nails, screwdrivers, sandpaper, saws etc. But, unless you are really interested in doing things the old fashioned way, you will want to invest in some good power tools. And when we say invest, spend the extra money for good equipment. It will be worth it in the long run. Here are the essentials.
A table saw is a must because it provides the stability for the wood as you cut it. You place your wood on a flat surface and you guide the wood through the cutting surface. If you've tried cutting wood manually, you won't believe the difference using a table saw makes. A good table saw will cost between $250 and $900.
Likewise a circular saw is an ideal tool to have. Hand-held circular saws take a little practice to use but they can be handy in certain situations. A good circular saw will cost about $200.
Another good purchase is for a belt sander. A good belt sander will save you time and tedium in finishing your wood piece. You will still have to do the fine sanding yourself, but for the larger surfaces, belt sanders are a great buy: around $100 to $200, depending on the features.
If you are sanding and if you have allergies, you had better invest in a vacuum cleaner. We don't think of vacuums as woodworking tools but you must have one to get all the sawdust and other particles out of your workspace. In fact, get two: a regular vacuum cleaner and one of those smaller ones for little jobs. These will make a great difference in your work space.
Once you have these tools, be sure you know how to use them. Take a woodworking class or go to a big-box home improvement store for pointers. You will be more likely to use these toys if you know how to use them properly.
Also be sure to have a place to put these tools when not in use. That's why workshop areas are so important. Having a workshop keeps the rest of your place cleaner. It also keeps your expensive tools out of harm's way. You don't want inquisitive kids hurting themselves by trying out your equipment. Having a workshop also gives you a place to concentrate on your project.
Once you have all these pieces, you are ready to get to work. Woodworking is a great hobby that you can enjoy for years to come by making items large and small.
