Nike Dunk SB – Why Is It Copied So Much

Here is a much abused and churned out theory on why Nike Dunk SB and Nike Air Jordans are the line of sneakers that are highly counterfeited or imitated. It goes somewhat like this (please notice jarring repetition,) the Nike Air Jordans and Nike Dunk SB are released once a year, and that the company does it in order to maintain the value of the shoe high which welcomes the counterfeiters. I wonder how on earth this will heed the forgers, although, prima facie, it may appear so.
This is a rather strange hypothesis that tries to put forward an escapist theory as the possible reason for fake Nike Dunk SB sneakers. It propagates that the biggest drive for copy cats is the theory of demand and supply. It appeared true to me initially for a few seconds. I am sure quite a few of you must have also thought the same but take closer looks at the problem on hand. As a user, a fan and a copy writer for Nike Dunk SB for so long a time, I have serious objections to accept this theory although it has some semblance of truth in it.
First of all, saying that short supply of a product leads to strong demand doesn’t apply to “objects of desire” like shoes, cars or watches etc. Since you “can” live without wearing watches or sneakers of your chosen brand (yes, I mean it,) you will simply avoid buying a pair of Nike Dunk SB or Nike Air Jordans if producers hike the base prices to, say, a few thousand dollars or discontinue the model forever. Think of it, the demand and supply theory applies to only essential commodities without which we can hardly sustain or eat. These are the everyday things like milk, bread, eggs and such like.
On the contrary, do you think that all the fake makers would wind up their businesses if Nike doubles up the production of Nike Dunk SB or Nike Air Jordans? They would not, because if Nike were to jack up its production, which it had not despite huge demand, it must be either to flush out the fakes or it must be seeing something really big coming. This is actually a tailor made and a most opportunistic situation for the counterfeiters too and they will also gear up to take on the market.
Insult to the Legendary Brand
Propagating wrongful theories only constitute insults to the super brand that rides the dreams of millions, the world over. Doesn’t the theory mean that the demand is high because of its dream designs and color combinations besides the guaranteed quality? Yes, Nike deliberately supplies short of market size but the demand is definitely not because of this. Oh! Come on; let us face it, hundreds of sneakerheads lining up in front of stores daring cold or the premium prices it commands over auction sites are all because of the brand’s proven popularity and it is not hot air or frenzied purchase.
