All was not well in NY City a couple of years ago during the release of the rarest Nike Dunk SB "Pigeons.” It was the winter of 2005, and beyond anybody’s wildest expectations, a kind of an splurge broke out at an exclusive Nike shop in New York as sneaker junkies lined up in icy weather for days waiting for the release of Nike Dunk SB Pigeon. There were seventy persons in the queue when the shop opened. The fight that was going on was to be amongst the first twenty as only 20 Pigeons were released. Nike Dunk SB is created to serve special basketball maneuvers such as pivoting and blocking. And Nike chose to keep the launch a low key affair by signing up eight university teams which created an aura of mystery around it. When the SB dunks were re-launched after several years, their popularity shot up abruptly. The specialty Nike Zoom Air, the low profile soles and pivot pins have helped fuel the rage to a larger extent unlike the electric colors and design aspects in the case of Nike Air Jordans.
Nike is resolute in its marketing strategies which still continues as releases in limited numbers notwithstanding the surge in demand. Although, with its roots are in basketball, the company immediately picked up the needs of skateboarding which ultimately unleashed the rage we see today. The craze hardly seems to die down. Nike being the master of marketing has its fingers on the pulse of the fans.
As if to fuel the rage further, Nike considers the brand being fashioned as casuals as a blessing in disguise even though they are made specifically for skateboarding. Mind you, I am not trying to relegate the valuable contributions made by aspects like quality and charms that offers a cracking combination of comforts and style. Regardless of all the grouses one hears, you may want to bow your head down for the courage that transformed a basketball shoe into this world beating skateboarding sneakers called Nike Dunk SB.
