Game safaris in Tanzania offer numerous chances to enjoy the beauty of the vast East African wilderness. Tanzania is in deed a foremost hunting safari destination in the region - boasting two safari circuits namely the southern circuit and the northern circuit. The southern safari circuit is anchored by Dar es Salaam and covers Selous, Mikumi, Ruaha and Udzungwa wildlife reserves. It is more popular among lovers of wildlife.
Selous Game Reserve is the icon of the southern circuit and game safaris in Tanzania can be so rewarding here. The reserve is named after Fredrick Courtney Selous, a famous naturalist and explorer who died here during the First World War. Placed some 500 km to the southwest of the city of Dar es Salaam, Selous spreads over an astonishing 55,000 sq km - slightly larger than Switzerland. It is recognized as the largest game reserve in Africa.
Selous was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 thanks to its diverse flora and fauna. This vast wilderness has a wide range of habitats including forests, swamps, savanna woodlands, and open grasslands. More than 2,100 species of plants have been recorded in Selous. The Rufiji River nourishes the reserve and its many tributaries and oxbow lakes are excellent for boat safaris. The game to view here include hippo, black rhino, buffalo, lion, waterbuck, reedbuck, baboon, wild dog, and many others. Notably, elephants are numerous in Selous - estimated to number over 60,000 individuals.
Mikumi National Park is believed to be the most accessible of the southern circuit game reserves. Situated some 283 km to the west of the city of Dar es Salaam, Mikumi spreads over 3,230 sq km and is home to a huge array of wildlife including buffalo, elephants, lion, warthog, zebra, giraffe, impala, wildebeest and eland. Also present in good numbers are the wild dogs - one of the carnivore species. Other animals that can be found in Mikumi are monitor lizards, hippos and crocodiles. Mikumi also boasts a huge population of birds, among them numerous Eurasian migrants.
Ruaha National Park, the second largest national park in Tanzania, is aptly named after its main source of water - the Great Ruaha River. Spreading over an astounding 12,950 sq km, the reserve is the largest elephant sanctuary in Africa. Other animals present in Ruaha include the Sable Antelope and the African Wild Dog. And with more than 430 bird species including, Kingfishers, Sunbirds and Hornbills, Ruaha is a haven for lovers of birds.
