Even though they come in a range of styles with varying functions, the best machines have a reservoir to hold the dirty water that is being sucked off the rug. Don't waste your money on a machine that simply produces steam without having the ability to remove the waste water. Even though the steam will break up the dirt, it won't do you much good if it stays on the rug.
The first time you use it you will be amazed at the amount of dirt that is removed. For particularly dirty areas, the improvement will be almost instantaneous. Occasionally you may need to clean a rug twice but rest assured that the rug won't be damaged. All the liquid will be removed quickly so as not to cause any mildew or damage.
A good machine will be easy to clean up after the rugs are done steam cleaning. The reservoirs usually just snap out and they can be rinsed under water. Even the brushes can be pulled off usually in one piece and most are dishwasher safe.
Be aware that these steam cleaners tend to be very large and very noisy, so be mindful of your neighbors if your walls are thin.
