Organizing A Hen Night - Who To Invite?
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Hen nights are one of those special occasions where a woman gets to spend quality time with all of her friends and loved ones before her wedding. They shouldn't be mistaken for bridal showers, though, as the latter are generally quiet gatherings where guests bring presents, while the former tend to involve partying and having some laughs, but without the presents.
First of all, the guest of honor: the bride. She can be the one who organizes the party, one of the invites if someone else is throwing it for her, or she could be surprised with an impromptu party. Whatever the case, she is the most important person there, so everything must be done according to her tastes. After all, she's going to have enough time for compromise after she gets married.
Deciding who to invite is not an easy job no matter how well you know the happy couple. Still, here are a few guidelines to help you. First of all, the bride will always be the guest of honor and everything should be done according to her preferences. Secondly, the bridesmaids should always be invited, as well as the sisters of the bride or groom, if there are any.
As a rule, you should invite all the bridesmaids, the sisters of the bride and of the groom, as well as any other of her close friends. Co-workers are also a good idea, but only if you know she has a habit of going out with them; don't exaggerate and send out invites to all the people she's polite to or to those she used to be friends with, but lost touch ages ago.
Another thing to keep in mind is not to invite any ex-girlfriends of the groom, no matter how close they may be with the bride. Alcohol and emotions tend to make old memories and old flames resurface. The same goes for people who aren't invited to the actual wedding, because it might seem rude to them. However, the rule of thumb is to invite anyone the bride wants to see there; after all, they are her friends and family and she knows them best.
In the end, remember that the whole point of the event is for everyone to have a good time and get to spend some quality time with the bride before the ceremony. Relax, have a few laughs, share some fun stories; these are all things she will remember when all the wedding stress has passed.
