Treatment of Diabetes. Is It Surgery?
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Diabetes develops when the body is not able to produce insulin the right way. Hence, there may be too little insulin in the body to regulate the blood sugar level or if the insulin is in the body, it might not have been used effectively thereby leading to diabetes. These two cases fall under two types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes may occur when there is no or too little insulin in the body that is the first case and type 2 diabetes may occur when the insulin of the body is not used effectively as in second case. Diabetes is taking the shape of grave disease with change in time. Near about to seven percentage of population in United States currently suffers from the disease. Most of these cases lie under type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes patients are initially treated with a healthy, well-balanced diet and regular exercising. A well-balanced diet and exercising helps in maintaining blood sugar level in the body. Regular exercise and healthy diet controls the body weight thereby controlling diabetes. If dieting and exercising do not help, than other modes of treatment like giving oral medications and Insulin shots are the next steps of the Diabetes treatment.
Now-a-days, diabetes patients are also treated with weight loss surgeries. It is believed that weight loss surgery is another tool to reduce the chances of diabetes. Weight-loss surgery is helpful in reducing type 2 diabetes specially which is much more prevalent than its similitude's. Patients who undergo weight loss surgery are 5 times more likely to repel diabetes within next two years as compared to others who undergo the normal medication. This method includes weight-loss surgeries and a medical weight-management program. Weight loss surgeries are of two types: gastric-bypass and the lap-band. Earlier, some of the surgeons believed that the new lap-band method will not prove to be as effective as gastric-bypass surgery for treating diabetes. The surgeons thought that the lap-band surgery would not bring the same changes as gastric-bypass surgery because there were some hormonal changes that went on while the stomach was being stapled in the lap-bad surgery.
But lap-band surgery also became as successful as gastric-bypass surgery after a couple of years. In lap-band surgery, the upper portion of stomach is tied-up with a silicone band whereas in gastric-bypass surgery, the stomach is made smaller by tying a band of silicone and dividing stomach into two equal parts. Food bypasses the small intestine in gastric-bypass surgery, thereby helping to reduce weight by absorbing lesser calories of food.
Almost 84 percent of the Type 2 diabetes patients in United States are given the gastric-bypass surgery treatment. The ratio of the death-rate of the patients undergoing Gastric-bypass surgery is 1 in 200 while the ratio of the death-rate of the patients undergoing Gastric-bypass surgery is 1 in 2000. Lap-band surgery has less side-effects in comparison to the Gastric-bypass surgery and is more safer than the Gastric-bypass surgery as the gall bladder is completely removed from the body in case of gastric-band surgery.
Many-a-times, Diabetes patients may opt for insulin or other medications. Dieting and exercising may also not bring in a good change. But, after going through lap-band surgery, there will not be any need for insulin or other medications, easy exercise, healthy diet. Lap-band surgery helps patients who suffer from obesity, have a body mass index of 40 or more, have a metabolic syndrome of Type II diabetes, hypertension and hyperlypodemia, high fat or cholesterol in their blood to reduce 10-20% of their body weight. It is believed that patients who loose their weight were more close to regulating diabetes. These methods are helpful to almost 76% of type 2 diabetes patients.
Scientists are finding the reason for obesity being the major cause of diabetes, and the reason for weight loss being the major treatment in controlling diabetes. Insulin's reaction in the body is stimulated by excess fat and cholesterol in the body. Tests are also being done to identify the the role of fatty acids in the blood and the hormones produced by fat in the body that regulate Insulin.
