A lot of people don't realize that people in wheelchairs need to exercise. Actually, everyone, even disabled people, need to have a healthy level of exercise. It is important to get the right amount of exercise in each day.
A good place to start with your goal to get in exercise is to get motivated. Some people find it motivating to think of all the benefits that come from exercising. Wheelchair exercises are beneficial because it increases your muscle strength. The stronger you are, the more independent you will be, and the less you will have to rely on others.
Once you have the drive and motivation to exercise, decide what exercises you want to do. Do you want to focus on strength training? Are you hoping to work on coordination? What areas do you want to focus on?
Remember that not all exercise needs to be done in a wheelchair. You don't have to do exercises in it just because you rely on it so much. A lot of exercise works best out of it, such as lifting heavy weights on your back.
Many exercises, however, can easily be achieved while you are inside your wheelchair. You can use your chair for mobility, which can be nice for more strenuous exercises. Your doctor will be able to recommend good workouts and give you an outline of how you can do them.
A good strength training exercise tool is a resistance band. A resistance band is easy to find in most fitness or sport stores. The band has a stretchy, rubber-band like material that has two handles on each side. The resistance band can be used while in the wheelchair and can be wrapped around the arms, under the wheel, or in doorways. You simply have to pull on the band and the resistance works out your arms and shoulders.
Look for other exercises that you enjoy. Work on cardio or strength training. Find something you are interested in and customize it to fit what you need.
Exercise benefits you emotionally, as well as physically. Exercise can give you better energy as well as help your concentration capabilities. Exercise also releases natural endorphins, which helps you feel happier and help your emotional state.
