A Way That Hospitals Can Help Reduce Healthcare Costs
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Each and every year the cost of healthcare goes up. One of the big reasons for this is the cost associated with medical malpractice. Every time a doctor makes a mistake there are a lot of costs that come up to take care of it. The good news is that a lot of hospitals are taking steps in the right direction to reduce these costs.
One step in the right direction that a lot of hospitals are taking is to engage in the practice of medical staff credentialing. If you've never heard of credentialing, it is a process that hospitals use to make sure that a doctor is qualified to do certain procedures. If they can't show that they are qualified and competent enough, they are not permitted to do that procedure in that hospital.
So how does this help the healthcare system? Well, there are a couple of ways this helps:
First, it cuts down on patient injury by real malpractice. Credentialing keeps unqualified doctors from doing a procedure they shouldn't be doing. If you don't have the credentials, you don't do the procedure.
Secondly, anytime there is a malpractice suit the hospital has to dedicate time and resources into investigating what went wrong. This is an additional expense that can go down if they can reduce the number of malpractice suits.
There are other reasons why credentialing is a good idea, but those are two of the main ones. And with just these two benefits, if there are any hospitals that are not using a medical staff credentialing system, they really should.
The other great thing for hospitals is that there are companies that have developed software that will help them to track the credentials that a doctor has. This way they don't have to run to the filing cabinet and waste time, they can pull the file up immediately and know whether a doctor is qualified or not.
While medical staff credentialing is not the one thing that will fix the extra costs in our healthcare system, it can definitely help. With costs going up every year, anything hospitals can do to reduce the cost of malpractice is a good thing.
