Even if the ringworm appears to go away effective ringworm treatments must be continued for the designated time. Otherwise the symptoms may reappear.
If the nonprescription antifungal cream does not alleviate the ringworm, then a health care professional should be consulted about further ringworm treatments. They can prescribe stronger antifungal topical creams or ointments. Sometimes the ringworm is more severe than over the counter medications can handle. It may also be in a much larger area and need further treatments.
The physician will most likely prescribe a stronger antifungal lotion such as Mentax, Oxistat or Lamisil. IF these ringworm treatments are ineffective, they may then prescribe an oral remedy. These capsules are taken by mouth and are generally an effective treatment. However, they can be rather strong and have possible side effects such as stomach upset or rash. They may also have an effect on the function of the liver.
If left untreated, ringworm can begin to blister and crack increasing the risk of infection. Once bacteria begins to grow in the area a doctor will have to prescribe antibiotics along with any other forms of ringworm treatments.
