The Claimed Benefits Of Hormesis Radiation To The Human Body
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Although quite controversial, many people still pay attention to the hormesis radiation paradigm. This is because its claims are so arousing to the human mind despite the fact that it can destroy common knowledge. Proponents of this paradigm even claim that low concentrations of radioactivity in the body can produce several benefits.
Two perspectives have been developed towards the use of radioactive materials for the human body. The positive view began when several radioactive particles found useful place in the field of medicine. The negative view was prompted by the increased incidence of cancer and mutation after the atomic bombings in Japan during World War II.
Studies have proven that high radioactivity in the body does result to DNA damage to the cells. This can be explained in the context of free radicals. Free radicals result from cellular metabolism, chemicals and radioactive exposure. When cells are exposed to them, the cells' physical components and eventually the internal parts would be destroyed.
But the body has its natural way of preventing these damages from happening. It produces radioprotective molecules to defend the cells against free radicals. Surprisingly, the production of these radioprotective molecules is stimulated with low dose radioactivity inside the body.
And when it comes to repairing damaged DNAs in cells, radioactivity also plays a major role. Repairing mechanisms are prompted with the production of enzymes such as endonuclease, phosphatase and polymerase. They inspect and repair DNA damage. The good thing is that radioactivity also stimulates the production of these enzymes in the body.
Radioactivity also facilitates apoptosis or cell self destruction. This is applicable for cells that have severely damaged DNAs which, when passed to daughter cells, can result to further mutations. Radioactivity also delays the entire cell replication process so that mother cells can be properly scrutinized for damages in their DNAs.
There have been evidences for the claims on hormesis radiation. But they remain to be an unresolved. People are still called to protect themselves from exposure, especially because the paradigm on hormetic radiation still indicates that high exposures are still harmful.
