Among all people, pregnant and lactating women should avoid taking herbal medicine or should consult their healthcare provider before taking any kinds of medication. Some herbs such as barberry root barks, juniper berries, and wormwood can increase the risk of getting a miscarriage. Respectively, some herbs may be harmless to the mother but can have adverse effects to the lactating infant.
As with any other medication, one should be extra careful in taking herbal medicines either for medication and supplement. It is never wise to self medicate as herbs have different effects on different persons. If you are planning to take herbal medication, it is best to consult both your herbalist and your physician. Herbal medicines if taken in larger doses than what is indicated can be harmful. It can cause health problems ranging from mild allergies to intoxication that can even cause death. If you feel any discomforts such as difficulty in breathing and palpitations after taking any herbal medicine, you should see your doctor immediately as you may be having an anaphylactic reaction. You should also inform your healthcare provider if you are taking more than one herbal medication or supplement at the same time. Herbs also have negative interactions with each other. Pregnant women should also avoid taking herbal medicines as some types of herb can increase the risk of getting a miscarriage.
