It isn't commonly known that there exists a difference between someone being an alcoholic and someone having an alcohol abuse problem. The latter are sometimes referred to as "functioning alcoholics" are people who are known to drink excessively and suffer from certain health problems which are normally related to certain symptoms of alcoholism.
Abusers of alcohol are very clever at being able to appear normal and carry out a normal life. Their own limits on alcohol consumption are normally well spread out throughout the day although the amount they consume is way over what a normal average social drinker may drink.
Sadly though alcoholics are just not able to put a limit to how much they consume due to the fact that their alcohol addiction is both physical and mental. Their whole existence is controlled by their need to drink alcohol leading to both their physical and mental health being affected. Another negative aspect regarding the disease of alcoholism is that sufferers just aren't able to stop themselves from drinking throughout the day.
Becoming alcohol free has subtle differences regarding the assistance required for both cases. Alcohol abusers will require emotional and psychological assistance whereas an alcoholic needs more help on the physical side as he is weaned off alcohol.
There has been a lot of talk recently about the connection between alcoholism and the increase in domestic violence. Research carried out in many universities though says that the alcohol factor in these cases may be misleading.
What we really can't establish is whether these domestic violence incidents the result of alcoholism or is it domestic violence that causes the abuse of alcohol. Whatever the case may be the underlying fact is that alcohol is present and domestic violence is being experienced in too many family homes and daily. Another sad fact is that all of the family members can be the alcoholics as well as those who are on the receiving end of the domestic violence.
Alcoholism is an illness that comes with blinkers and won't allow you to see the reality of the situation, but the first step for a family to overcome these problems is by admitting that they exist in the first place. The ideal start would be able to sit around the table together and discuss the problem rashly, but make sure that alcohol is not part of the meeting as this can lead to a violent end.
If you have begun to notice significant changes in a person's emotional and physical behavior during stressful times, alcohol abuse may be a factor and should be taken seriously. There are many organizations, progams, and articles that can be found to help understand the toll both physical and alcohol abuse can have on a family.
