Sun Country Airlines was created over 30 years ago by highly experienced aviation employees from Braniff Airlines. Unfortunately Braniff went out of business, and this core group of people had the keen desire to continue doing what they knew by creating a brand new airline. The airline went a long way in their run of nearly twenty years, and in December, 2001, they went out of business due to the events of a few months before. Just like the phoenix who rises from the ashes, Sun Country Airlines was bought up and then put back into business. That is what this company has demonstrated time and again in the face of harsh economic times.
Only 33 employees were on board when Sun Country first began scheduled flights. Yet they were all experienced airline people; having been working for Braniff Airlines prior to Sun Country. Pilots and flight attendants did a variety of jobs in addition to their primary roles within the company. But they were highly motivated and wanted to succeed, and therefore they did what was necessary to become successful. Much to their credit, they were in profits in less than two months of operation.
In September of 2010, Sun Country Airlines finally announced that their plan for reorganization to exit bankruptcy has been confirmed. What that means is a bankruptcy judge must make a determination and decision whether or not to grant approval. Many times any creditors who are involved with weigh the decision as well. Any plan needs the approval of everybody because investors will naturally want to receive some portion of their money back. The overall plan typically consists of cash payouts plus allotment of equity within the company.
Sun Country also offers leasing options varying in choice from wet to dry lease options. Many will take full advantage of the wet lease because of the inclusion of a crew, insurance, maintenance and the aircraft making the operation the responsibility of the airline instead of the lessee. The company makes every effort to accommodate clients, and so they can be as flexible as necessary regarding leasing durations. However the typical wet lease aircraft period is between several months to a year, or more.
Maybe it is normal, the story of Sun Country Airlines, because we all have dreams and then we work to make them happen. But it all started with Braniff Airlines shortly after they went out of business. The tale of Sun Country Airlines is full of drama, success, hard times, and hope. You cannot dismiss the many awards and mentions they have received, both nationally and internationally. Now that here in late 2010 this company has been reorganized under bankruptcy, let us hope smoother sailing is ahead.
