How To Spot Scabies Symptoms and Protect Yourself

It is important to know the different types of symptoms associated with scabies in case you, or your children, become infested with these little bugs. The very first thing you should know is that it will take up to two weeks for any type of symptoms to appear, especially if a person has just been infested with the mites. But still, during that time frame the scabies mite is still contagious. With no symptoms to provide a warning, people can be carriers of the mites and be contagious spreading them to many others. This is not a question of bad hygiene or being dirty, but rather it is contagious microscopic insect, called a mite, that can spread. Infestations are possible through direct contact with another person or an object that has the scabies on them.
Scabies is often confused with irritated areas of the skin that are dry, which is similar to what the mites may look like. The burrowing will continue, and the mites will continue to grow in numbers unless some form of treatment is used. One of the visual symptoms are the very small tracks in the skin which are the burrows created by the mites. Several tell-tale signs are if the itching becomes noticeably worse after taking a bath/shower and also at night. Overall, children are the worst afflicted by these little creatures because of the intense itching.
The rash and other effects of the scabies mite infection habitually appear on several locations throughout your body. One common place is in the fold of the wrist or the inside of the forearm. The webbed area between the fingers is a favorite spot for the mites to burrow. The scabies are partial to a moist environment so this makes your armpits and groin area prime territory for a scabies infestation. The umbilicus (belly button) and waist line are common locations to find the scabies rash due to the infestation. Males and females also have their own certain areas where the symptoms of scabies can appear.
If someone has sensitive skin or has developed a very serious case of scabies, they may end up with what is known as nodular scabies. It is believed that the nodules result from a strong allergic reaction to the mites and their eggs. You will typically find these nodules developing in sections of your body that are, as a rule, hidden under your clothes. The normal places you may discover nodular scabies are the buttocks, in the groin region, and underneath the arms. For weeks, or even months, after the adult mites have been terminated, the scabies nodules can plague you. Even though scabies is transmitted through personal contact, sexual activity is not a precursor to its ability to spread from host to host. They are able to spread mostly because of their ability to survive apart from the host for up to a day and a half. This type of spreading is especially seen in homes with large families that share many items. Be sure to take anyone in your family that you suspect of having scabies to a physician to not only get a diagnosis, but to start treatment if the scabies has infested their skin.
