Global Superior Energy Performance Partnership Reveals A Significant Potential

One of the most creative initiatives to come out of Washington DC recently emerged as a consequence of the Clean Energy Ministerial meeting. It is likely that this initiative will be as important for building energy efficiency as the ISO 50001 and LEED certification have been. The Global Superior Energy Performance Partnership is designed to target efficiency improvement in commercial buildings and industrial facilities alike.
Around the world, buildings account for 60% of carbon emissions produced as a result of energy used and anything that can provide a significant improvement in energy efficiency is bound to be widely accepted. Funding is being provided in the initial stages by the United States government, but other countries are also chipping in and the reach of the project is intended to be truly international.
In addition to the United States, Canada, France, India, Japan, Mexico, Korea, South Africa, Russia, Sweden and the European commission (as an entity) have come together to back the Global Superior Energy Performance Partnership. The strength of this initiative is in its collaboration, as a number of independent corporations have stepped up to the plate to become partners in the pilot scheme.
Companies such as Target, Wal-Mart, Marriott, Dow Chemical Co. and Nissan are among the pilot participants in the Global Superior Energy Performance Partnership. These companies will invest their own resources in addition to the $3 million put forward by the United States government to launch the project. It is intended that these pilot companies share knowledge amongst all other participants and that combined, the findings will enable the construction of consolidated certification standards in the future.
The primary aims of the Global Superior Energy Performance Partnership are to cut energy use, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contain budgetary spending and create jobs. These primary goals will be incorporated into the certification when it is released and in future, building facility owners must make sure that they contain energy use and initiate efficiency improvements. It'll be necessary for them to obtain independent certification and validation before they are successful.
Each business will need to create an energy management system for its own use, as part of the Global Superior Energy Performance Partnership. This will require the establishment of a baseline, so that all those involved clearly know the way forward.
We know how chief executives are focusing on corporate sustainability as an increasing trend around the globe. Any initiative aimed at increasing building energy efficiency under their control is likely to be widely adopted. So far, the main standards involved with building efficiency have been the well established ISO 50001, as well as LEED certification.
Software solutions have emerged to help companies track the energy efficiency within buildings and assets alike. These solutions should be the basis of every company's pursuit of sustainability in a complex and competitive trading world ahead.
