Tools Every Homeowner Needs

Renters have it easy. The super does everything for them from when the sink clog ups to when the dishwasher won't drain.

But now that you have taken the plunge into home ownership, you will have to take care of the little bumps and breaks on your own. Here are a few tools that every home owner should have for the everyday care of their property.

Hammer It In

Hammers are the basic tool if you want to hang a picture. But this tool has more than meets the eye and will come in handy for many jobs. It can be an indoor or outdoor tool for activities such as driving stakes into the ground or pulling out old nails from the wall.

Hammers generally weigh about a pound or a little more. For smaller jobs or weaker arms, lighter hammers are also available. Always buy the best quality hammer you can afford. Older tools or products that are made for low-end discounters can fall apart and injure you or a family member.

Screwdriver Sets

Screwdriver sets are essential for every homeowner and will come in handy for many projects. A screwdriver is required to assemble most of the furniture purchased at large retailers. Among these are bookcases, garden furniture, and cribs. Don't be caught off-guard. A range of Phillips and Flat heads should be found in a complete set. Some sets offer one handle but with interchangeable heads.

You should invest in a power screwdriver set if you plan to perform some do-it-yourself projects. It is very useful for a lot of things like repairing the hardware in your kitchen and bathroom cabinets and for installing new window treatments. It will take the strain off of your wrists and arms and will make the project go much faster.

Drilling With Power

Once you have fallen in love with the idea of a power screwdriver, you will eventually also want a power drill. This will be your first choice when you need to attach an item to a wall from small pictures to large drapes. Securing a heavy item to a wall would mean attaching your screw or nail to a stud instead of directly into the drywall. Unfortunately, this is also tougher to penetrate. Not only can the power drill speed up the process, but it will also relieve the stress and strain from your arms. Many power drill sets come with screwdriver heads, so you get two tools for the price of one.

Safety First

Safety goggles are also a must, so when you buy your tools make sure to include this piece of equipment. Repairs can make quite a mess. Dust, bits of wood or metal can fly into the air. Better to have goggles on your eyes than debris from what you're working on. Whenever you attempt to do any home repair job, always protect yourself.

Getting Things Together

Consider buying a toolkit after buying all your tools. This will keep all of your supplies in one location so that you have them when you need them.
