The protocol series for wireless devices is recognizable with a certain standard consisting of a series of numbers. At first glance most people that aren't computer savvy would have no clue what this means. It's simply the way that different types of computer devices are labeled according to their functions.
The number that is assigned to devices centered around networking is 802.11. You probably have already seen this number on a router is you have one. Anything with 802.11 on it will be somehow connected to your computer network.
The number 802.11 will be followed by a specific letter. This letter that follows will either be a,b,g, or the most recent n. They let you know the specs for each of the different standards.
The slower standards are 802.11a and 802.11b. 802.11a operates in the 5 GHz band which gives it an advantage over 802.11b and 802.11g. The 5 GHz band is a less crowded band which makes the 802.11a series more reliable and quicker at times.
The series 802.11b operates in the 2.4 GHz band which is the same band as most microwaves, cell phones, and wireless phones. As stated, it has a larger range and penetrates walls easier than the other bands. However, 802.11b does not have the capacity as its counterpart 802.11g.
The standardization 802.11g can work hand in hand with 802.11b parts. The only problem is that having 802.11b parts will slow your network down. 802.11g devices will also function on the widely known 2.4 GHz band which gives it many of the same characteristics of the 802.11b.
The standard 802.11n is the newest and most improved standard. It puts together a combination of higher speeds, better bands, and wide ranges. It operates in both 5 GHz and 2.4 GHZ bands giving you the option of having less interference in the 5 GHz band or wider ranges in the 2.4 GHz band.
You will want to choose a router and stick with that router's network. You don't want to have mixed parts because most aren't compatible with each other and if they are, it will slow your network down. Whatever network you pick is up to you and will depend on your personal situation.
