The scientific advancements and the constant researches that are conducted have influenced several perspectives of the investigation as well as medical arena. The digital fingerprinting and paternity testing using DNA samples are the two most common examples of such enhancements. The former is used to identify the criminals associated with a particular crime. Whereas, the latter that is the DNA paternity testing is conducted using the DNA samples and matching them together to find out whether a particular person is the biological father of the child. The digital fingerprints have emerged as a result of the technological developments in the investigation department.
The arrival of the digital fingerprinting has made the process of identifying the culprits easy and accurate. The traditional form of fingerprinting process was not as effective as this one and it did not ensure accuracy as the digital form does. The DNA paternity testing is also utilized to identify the real mother of the baby. Prior to the evolution of these methods, the people used to examine the resemblance in the eye lids of a child and his father to find out whether the relation is biological. In fact, the biological relation was also tried to be analyzed by checking whether there is any resemblance in the facial structure or behavioral habits of the two. However, with the passage of time and the development of the technological devices, the modern form of testing has evolved to help the children identify their biological father and mother along with other tests to identify the siblings.
The fingerprinting process has been classified into several categories including digital fingerprinting and DNA fingerprinting. The DNA fingerprinting has been generally used as one of the ways of trapping the criminals, but recently, it has been established as one of the most useful alternatives for DNA paternity testing. This form of fingerprinting method is also known as DNA profiling. Using this technique, the individuals are identified on the basis of their unique DNA profiles. This DNA profiling is done by analyzing the VNTR sequences. It stands for variable number tandem repeats. This sequence is found to be different in individuals except in twins.
As per the facts mentioned above, the DNA samples of the child will exhibit the similar VNTR loci as that of their parents. This fingerprinting helps in identifying that whether the known father of a child is genuinely his biological dad. In fact, it is sometimes also utilized to find out the identity of the mother. Thus, this DNA form of the process has caught the attention of more people than the digital fingerprinting that is used as mere a method of identifying the criminals whereas the other one is also concerned with the DNA paternity testing technique.
The digital fingerprinting and the DNA fingerprinting, however, occupies their own separate positions in the investigation arena. The DNA paternity testing procedure includes various techniques for examining the biological relationship of the child with the parent. Some of them include restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis; polymerase chain reaction also called PCR, Y chromosome analysis, mitochondrial DNA analysis, and others.
