Didactic Poetry: Start A Search In Your English Literature Text Book

The Arts and Entertainment world today should take a bow to the poetry of yesteryear. Poetry, as defined by The New Standard Encyclopedia, copyright 1982, explains that poetry is a form of literature. That is true. Poetry is a form of literature but if you leave it that, you are missing out on the deeper importance of the art form. Read on and dig a little deeper and you will find that there are three major divisions in poetry. These major divisions have been recognized since the Renaissance period.
You may have seen or read poetry from the first division of poetry. The first division is called Narrative Poetry. Epics and Ballads are great examples. This division is unique because the exposition tells a story. Robert Frosts' "Birches" is one famous example of a Narrative Poem. Read this poem and you will see a story about birch trees and what they mean to Robert Frost.
The second major division is Dramatic Poetry. Dramatic Poetry is a little different in that the characters themselves reveal the story through their own speech. A drama or play where the actors use verse to get their point across is viewed as dramatic poetry.
Lastly, the third major division of poetry is Lyric Poetry. Lyric Poetry is usually short, unified and gets down to the actual personal feelings of the poet. A few examples of Lyric Poetry are the ode, the sonnet, a song, or madrigal.
Although there are three major divisions of poetry, several minor divisions emerged and need to be mentioned. Didactic poetry focuses on a moral lesson or some teaching. Satirical Poetry follows a ridiculous idea or some evil plot carried out in a humorous type manner. Lastly, Pastoral or Idyllic Poetry shows the idealized happenings of rural life.
As a business student English Literature definitely qualified as one of my most challenging courses of all time. In that, I am often reminded through the throws of life that these poets faced similar challenges. Their words come back to me in a powerful way. It was Walt Whitman that said "And your flesh shall be a great poem." How true that is and I have never forgotten.
Given the chance, reading poetry has the power to move your soul. I encourage you to read some of the greats and they will pour out their hearts. Do a little research and it will make more sense.
Poetry points out my own struggles, failures and successes. In reading, I can not help but to apply it to my own experience. I have to extend a deep appreciation to the poet who has the ability to stir the inner emotion of the reader.
