Science fiction short stories are those that are told in very few pages. The story does not need to be a complete account, it could be told outlining a series of events instead of the complete story. Hereunder is a guide on how one can write such stories.
For a start, get a brief idea of what you intend to write. There are various themes that you may use to write science fiction. Just like other genres there are various themes within that genre. It could be a romantic theme or something of the sort.
Write a sketch of what you intend to build your story on. You may frame the sketch by use of several questions. This is where you shall depart from in writing the short story. It will just be a guide and you can keep changing and adding bits and pieces as you go by.
Draft out the story. The draft will be your first piece of work. This will be formulated based on the guidelines that had been written down. If you feel that the storyline is not flowing in terms of the ideas you could take a break or restart to refresh your mind and get you to write better.
One then ought to read through the draft. An individual is best placed to judge his or her own work, this will tell you if there is a point that has been conveyed the way you wanted it to. Once you have done this, making the necessary corrections will be easier. One needs to note that this is only checking whether the overall message is conveyed and that it is not proofreading.
Read through a second time. This is for the purpose of making the story spice. You will add the spice by replacing flat phrases with those that are catchier.
Proof read the story. This is the final step so you will look out for any errors in grammar or spelling. Moreover you should be able to delete any unnecessary sections. You may consider getting someone to read after you are done say the publisher.
When the book is still being published you may send an excerpt of the book to magazines that review this genre. This may be a way of advertising before the book comes out. It might improve the sales greatly especially if it is targeted at an interested group of readers. You may also enlist the publishers help in marketing the book ahead of its release.
