Ah, San Francisco! When you come here, be sure to wear flowers in your hair and bring enough cash to cover your expenses. When you come, you have to book a nice room, in a nice part of town. When you come, you should take in all the usual tourist traps -- and few overlooked ones. Also, keep in mind if you're looking for San Francisco hotels Union Square is a great place to start -- from Union Square the entire city is your oyster.
Before we get to the more popular destinations, we need to swing by the Legion of Honor. Tucked in at the corner of 34th and Clement, the Legion, as it's known locally, Built in 1924 as an ode to the Palais de La Lgion d'Honneur in Paris, the structure is a memorial to the 3,600 Californians who gave their lives on the battlefields of France during World War I. From it's impressive exterior and foyer, you can push your way into the Legion and take in the collection of Rodin sculptures and paintings from Monet and El Greco.
Leaving the Legion, you can catch a Muni bus to the waterfront and book your tour of Alcatraz. Yes, this is very touristy and very predictable, but it's essential you see it. It's like going to New York and not going to see the Statue of Liberty. Book it, ride the ferry out, and behold the stark beauty of the prison that once held the most notorious criminals on the west coast, including Al Capone (even though he was sentenced in Chicago) and Machine Gun Kelly.
Are you hungry now? Good, once you disembark from the ferry, you can drop down into Chinatown. Yes, New York has a Chinatown -- in fact, most major North American cities have a Chinatown -- but this Chinatown is the the single largest concentration of Chinese residents outside of China. You'd be hard-pressed to find Chinese food as delicious as what you'll find at Mee Mee Bakery. By most accounts, Mee Mee's is credited with being the birthplace of the fortune cookie.
Closing out the tourist spots is the one, the only: Golden Gate Bridge. Yes, like Alcatraz, it's a trap. But, like Alcatraz, you have to experience the bridge. You have to walk it at least once in your life. While parking can be problematic, especially during the peak summer season, it's worth the time and effort. The bridge is pedestrian friendly and makes for a lovely day, soaking up the sun, wind, and eventual, perpetual fog. If you make it to the bridge, aim for late afternoon so you can watch the fog come rolling into the Bay.
