Large numbers of people like to take vacations with a difference and increasing numbers of visitors are finding the usual seaside vacations unappealing. The challenge to find is forever increasing and vacation planners are continually searching for new and exciting places in which to take a vacation or that offer something of unusual appeal. In the article below I examine the small town of Stornoway on the Hebridean island of Lewis and describe the factors which help make this such a fantastic vacation destination.
The Island Of Lewis
Lewis, and the Isle of Harris, is the largest island in the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles. The islands is found a fair distance from the west coast of Scotland further out from Skye, needing a ferry journey or flight to get there. Due to the remoteness it was only since the middle to late 20th century that ordinary tourists have been able to access to the islands for a vacation, before then it was only those with enormous funds who could afford the trip. The only other option to visit the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles was to arrive to seek employment.
A great many years ago Stornoway was a very important fishing port. The main quarry of the fishing boats was herring and during the herring season Stornoway's population increased from around 6,000 to over thirty thousand. An astonishing number of Stornoway Hotels, bed and breakfasts and guesthouses developed to satisfy the demands for lodgings the the immense influx of temporary inhabitants created. These days the population of the town stays at just more than six thousand (not including visitors).
Sadly the herring industry fell into a dramatic decline following World War One with the utter collapse of the Russian and German markets. The town of Stornoway still has a small fishing fleet but few buildings remain from that era and the town lost a great deal of character during the redevelopment of the 1970's.
Recently the Western Isles Council has enhanced, rather sympathetically, the town centre building a few works of art on the theme of the herring industry as well as adding fountains and areas of flower beds. New architecture are also more sympathetic to the environment, such as the An Lanntair building on the seafront.
Although there are far fewer Stornoway hotels existing today, only the Royal Hotel existed during the pinnacle of the Herring industry, there remains a huge number of Stornoway bed and breakfasts, plus hostels, inns and guest houses. There is even a caravan site on the outskirts of town.
