The town of Perth, in Scotland, is also commonly referred to as being the 'Gateway to the Highlands'. Located on the River Tay's banks, the town of Perth was Scotland's capital and back in medieval times the busy little town was known by local folk as St. Johnstone or St. John's Town. The name of Perth, or Peairt in the Gaelic language, is derived from the Pictish word which has the meaning of a wood. Nowadays this beautiful small market town is an awesome place for a Scottish vacation with an abundant amount of Perth bed and breakfasts to choose from ranging from the inexpensive accommodation to the incredibly highly priced superior five star luxury country estate hotels with lots of charm and character.

Around 3 miles away, from Perth, you will find the 16C Elcho Castle, which features the most glorious views of the River Tay. The castle dates back to about the year fifteen seventy when the Wemyss family commissioned it's building who were it's owners until nineteen twenty nine. Elcho Castle is now in the hands of Historic Scotland.
One of the most visited attractions, not too far from Perth, is Scone Palace one of the nation's finest historical country homes. Here you can learn about the highly interesting history of the palace, the place where at one time, the kings of Scotland were crowned such as, Robert The Bruce who took to the throne in 1306.
Other than the attractions mentioned earlier Perth has countless more, making it an awesome place for a vacation for the family. Attractions and places, worth a visit, found in Perth and Perthshire include the following; Perthshire Visitor Centre, Kinnoull Hill, Perth Ice Rink (for curling etc.), Perth Art Gallery & Museum and the Black Watch museum in Balhousie Castle.
