London is the place where bands go to make it in the music business, the capital city and the place where everyone who matters in music lives. These are generally bands who are looking to make it big, so for live gigs London is easily the place to see the "next big thing". While there are many bands at the bottom trying to work their way up, there are also some huge bands that are already right at the top, so with these many bar and club venues, where do the global superstars play to many thousands of people?
Wembley Stadium is the biggest and best venue for this size of band. The rebuilt national stadium was built with gigs in mind, so there is a retractable pitch for the stage and standing area. There are 90,000 seats so the capacity can be very large when a gig is sold out, with the atmosphere being second to none when the biggest bands in the world are playing. Oasis, U2, Foo Fighters and Green Day have all played there in recent times.
For the big, completely outdoor gigs in London look no further than Hyde Park. They can have a huge capacity here, being outdoors in a park it is very expandable, and every year many bands play here. They play host to the O2 Wireless Festival and Hard Rock Calling mini-festival each year, and they both get huge name acts such as The Killers and Bruce Springsteen to name but two from the last few years.
Out of the ashes of the failed Millennium Dome project rose the O2 Arena, which is a big indoor arena on a par with the M.E.N in Manchester. The capacity is up to 23,000 depending on the type of event and the setup of the crowd. You can eat and drink around the concourse area in a huge variety of restaurants and bars. The big selling bands of the moment play at this arena, people like Black Eyed Peas, Lady GaGa and Alicia Keys have played there in the recent past, and it is generally where acts who are not at the level of the super-venues play. For a lot of bands who don't go any further, playing venues like the O2 is the pinnacle of their careers.
The other two venues are Earls Court and Wembley Arena, but these are not used all that much anymore, due to the ongoing popularity of the newer O2 Arena, where most bands choose over these ones nowadays.
