The country of Scotland is a fine place in which to take a week or two's vacation. The nation is suitable for an abundant choice of varying vacations, featuring large regions of gorgeous countryside with marvelous amounts of sites of outstanding natural beauty (perfect for hikers, ramblers, mountain climbers, hill-walkers and the likes). The nation also features some of the most popular attractions, including, some of the most highly interesting galleries and museums in the United Kingdom, spectacular sites of beauty, castles, fortified houses, historical buildings and stately homes plus much more. Below I discuss the town of Stranraer.
Stranraer is a town located in southerly Scotland in Dumfries & Galloway, the town is most widely known for it being the place where folk can sail to Northern Ireland. Unfortunately virtually all people fail to visit some of the tourist attractions in and around Stranraer. This is a little bit of a puzzle, if you get to the town, and book a room in a Stranraer bed and breakfast, a day or two earlier it would be possible to get to see a selection of the local attractions prior to catching the ferry to Belfast.
There are a number of things to see and do in the port including the medieval tower house called the Castle of St John located in the heart of the town. The castle was erected in the year fifteen ten as a residence for Ninian Adair of Kilhurst (the Laird of Wigtownshire). The structure was renovated, in the years 1988/89, by Wigtown District Council who opened it to the public in nineteen ninety.
Another visitor attraction close to the town is the gardens of Castle Kennedy. The castle forms the centrepiece of the garden which are located, between two lochs, on a hill (it is important to know that you are no longer allowed to visit the ruined castle. The castle's gardens consist of seventy five acres. It is possible to buy plants from the store which has reared them from plants and seed from the garden.
A further gorgeous tourist attraction worth visiting is Glenluce Abbey, about seven miles from Stranraer. Even though it is in ruins (actually the most ruined of a trio of monasteries found in the south western region of Scotland) it has a superb fifteenth century Chapter House. Other places well worth taking the time to visit include, Port Logan, Portpatrick, the Mull of Galloway and the Machars.
