WANTED: Focus!
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
So often we feel as if we might have to place a classified ad just to locate some focus! This is especially true for internet marketers who office at home. Surely you understand the dilemma; you may be living in a similar situation yourself: The alarm clock rings and you set about making coffee. First thing you know, before youve had that first cup of motivation, the phone is ringing ALREADY! Maybe that wakens the babythe newspaper is on the lawn and you are in your pajamas. Well, the ads promised: Work at Home"doesnt that give you license to work in your nightwear?
And thats not ALL
The stay-at-home mom from the house next door knows you are home all day. She may make an effort to impose upon you for child care. Worse, she and her girlfriends may ring your doorbell and insist you go shopping with them because you only work at home anyway! Eye-rolling, isnt it? As if that werent enough, there are the videos your friends send you; the once-in-a-lifetime offer from every internet launch on earth and we cant overlook the television voices hawking their goods with a come hither tone in their voice that calls you away from your focus. Old fashioned procrastination is another offender to losing sight of whats really important. What IS the answer to finding lost focus? You may wish to consider a few of these suggestions:
Plan Your Work and Work Your Plan
Its not important to your success in life to build-and follow-a plan. It is CRITICAL.
Some people think it is helpful to create a task list before bedtime.
Other people like to create this type of list in the freshness of a new day.
Still others plan for a month at a time to plan the way their days will be organized.
Many people will wander willy-nilly through their days with no plan at all!
Decide on when and how you will prepare your list.
As you accomplish each task, indicate on the list when the item is completed. Give yourself a red checkmark, for instance. This is the adult equivalent to kindergarten silver stars.
Reward Yourself
Beyond the instant gratification of having accomplished your tasks, and checking them off, you can regularly reward yourself for jobs completed. I know a work-at-home internet marketer who grants herself 30 minutes every time she finishes three main tasks on her To Do list. When she gets that third item crossed off, she takes half an hour to do things she WANTS to get done. She may spend the time doing exercise; she may look at personal emails; she may just play with her canine pal.
There Are No Excuses
Life happens. At some point the plumber will have to come or the electricity may be interrupted or the modem on your internet connection could blow. These are not reasons to retreat to the kitchen, snack the afternoon away and moan that you did not finish your plan for the day. Go with the flow; focus on what you hope to get done.
Be Accountable
Being accountable for doing your work can range from reporting to a life coach to making an entry in a journal. Some enterprising internet people have teamed up to form weekly conference calls to ensure accountability. The bonus of doing this is that it increases your creativity exponentially. For internet marketers, creativity is a most valuable asset. Another method for accountability is to consider your bank balance. To take that a step further, you may want to develop the kind of relationship with your banker where you would actually report your progress to a real, live person-say, over coffee or lunch, and actually educate someone offline about your online efforts, successes, and even your failures. It will take the sting out of any misses, give you support and take away any feelings of isolation borne of working at home.
In Summary
By incorporating some of the ideas presented here for keeping your focus, you will discover that the only wanted ad youll need to place might be in the Classifieds, under Help Wanted!.
