Technology changes everyday. In a span of ten years, the changes that have taken place are phenomenal. Twenty years ago, no one would have even dreamed of being connected with the entire world through mobile phones and the internet, of quick food thanks to microwaves and of instant photos thanks to camera phones.
Recently however a new obsession has been observed. Music. If you observe people waiting at a bus stop or travelling in the metro or just walking to their workplace, you almost always see a pair of headphones tucked into their ears. Its nice to see that suddenly so many people listen to music so much of the time. It definitely makes waiting seem less boring and adds a spring to your step on a dull Monday morning as you trudge to work listening to 'manic Monday' on your iPod.
iPods were developed by Apple Inc in 2001. Each generation of iPods have new and added features that make them simpler and better. An improvision on an existing iPod is termed as a 'generation'. There are different kinds have iPods that have taken over the market-the classic iPod, the video-capable iPod nano, the screen- less iPod shuffle, the iPod touch and the iPhone. You can have thousands of songs in your pocket including additional features such as games, photos and web access.
The whole process is cheap. I remember saving up pocket money for months a few years ago to be able to buy my favourite CDs. Now however all you have to invest in is an iPod and you're set for life where music is concerned.
However a study has recently shown that iPods have been increasingly leading to a large number of deaf adults. More than 70 per cent of the youngsters are suffering from the first sign of hearing loss with tinnitus or ringing in the ear. It has been revealed that 60 per cent of young adults play music at dangerously loud levels. The process of decrease in hearing ability is gradual and hence the person involved often does not realise when this is happening.
In spite of the great fun an iPod is associated with, the negative effects are far too momentous to be ignored. This problem has especially to be explained to teenagers who love wrapping themselves up in the cocoon of music and for whom adverse consequences matter little as is characteristic of youth. That doesn't negate the pure genius of the creation of this tiny musical device. But it does tell us to be careful of the way we use it. Moderation is the answer. Let's be aware. Let's hear.
