Deep Cycle Batteries - For A Smaller Amount of Energy Over Long Stretches
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
If you spend little time around machines you may not have heard of deep cycle batteries. Should you buy an RV, solar PV system or golf cart, however, get to know the difference between these and car batteries. They are not all made the same, though as in the case of any product, you can get a good idea of quality by the number of years a company will back it.
For one thing, deep cycle batteries are designed to run for long stretches at a time. Output will be lower, though, than in the case of something used at a higher output for a short time such as your Audi. Back-up power, trawling motors and the fishing freezer on your boat are just a few more examples of items that use little power but run for several hours without a break.
How long each battery lasts depends on a number of factors. Built with thicker plates to resist corrosion, this also prevents early failure. They are also not generally meant to be used as starting batteries, though modern machines are less damaging when employed in this way than with older vehicles.
There are three types. One is the wet (flooded) sort, perfect for marine installation. Another is known as gelled. The third is an AGM or absorbed glass mat. AGM could be used with a renewable power system (solar PV) and, like gelled batteries, are safer since you will not have acid or electrolyte spillage issues. When it comes to every day usage or equipment that might have to take some rough handling, these are your best bet.
With some batteries, lifespan could be months. With others, decades may see your battery outlast the forklift or RV it gives energy to. Be careful to store your product at the correct temperature and neither overcharge or leave it uncharged. Any of these factors could wear a battery down early, or before it is even used.
