Flashbacks begin most episodes. These flashbacks show that Henry Spencer wished that his son would follow in his footsteps and become a law enforcement officer. In preparation, Henry helps Shawn hone his powers of observation and deduction, often using games and challenges to test him. Each flashback also sets the theme for the episode, based on the challenge Shawn's father presents him. Shawn originally becomes known as a psychic when, after calling in a tip on a crime covered on the news, the police become suspicious of his knowledge. Theorizing that such knowledge could only come from the "inside," they decide to arrest him as a suspect. To avoid being sent to jail, Shawn uses his observational skills to convince all present that he is psychic.
So we didn't really know how to do it. Two, three years later, we branched out, changed the landscape of our show. We got more confident. I think waiting is the best thing we could have done." Conveniently timed to the series' 20th anniversary, the labor of love notably includes a number of original "Twin Peaks" cast members. One of them, Roday's friend Dana Ashbrook, helped rally the alums for the episode, which finds Shawn (Roday) and Gus (Dul? Hill) in a Twin Peaks-esque town (Dual Spears) trying to solve the murder of a young woman not too different from Laura Palmer.
It looks like Juliet will hold Yin at gunpoint.
Yin will threaten Shawn and Gus with a needle. (Where Gus worries about germs Monk-style. Can we have a crossover? Please?) Yin's identity will finally be revealed. Some things to ponder....why was Shawn in a picture with Yang when he was little? Will we ever find out why Mary was so obsessed with the case? Why was Shawn targeted in the first place? What happened fifteen years ago when Yin and Yang first terrorized Santa Barbara? All these questions and more will be answered Wednesday at 10pm only on USA! This episode will be jam packed with guest stars, including Ally Sheedy, Cybill Shepard and Jimmi Simpson, all of whom reprise their roles from the previous Yin Yang episodes. Mena Suvari of American Pie fame will also appear in this episode.
"We sort of crafted these characters specifically for the actors that we wanted and crossed our fingers," says Roday, who ended up getting Catherine E. Coulson, Sherilyn Fenn, Sheryl Lee and previous "Psych" guest star Ray Wise, among others. "I think what we discovered is that a lot of them haven't seen each other for 15 or 20 years." Writing in the characters wasn't a problem for Roday, but capturing the Lynchian tone was a bit more daunting. He started by writing scenes he thought would work in the original series and then went from there. "Our audience is willing to give us some stretching room," he says.
Uh oh, Shawn and Gus are in trouble again. I know, big surprise, right? Well this time they're naughty enough to get themselves sent to the police academy to learn basic police procedure. There they meet up with their instructor Nick (played by Ralph Macchio) and I know it's been said many times before but da-amn, it's amazing how young that guy still looks. He looks like he's in his 30's so I figured he was probably around 40, but I was wrong, he's actually 49. Wow.
The body of a young girl wrapped in plastic makes a woman scream a few minutes into tonight's supersized episode of Psych, an homage to Twin Peaks. The moment is rather dark in tone, but Peaks fans won't be able to subdue their smirk of recognition during the scene. And there's more where that came from: The episode is so packed with nods to the cult series that it runs almost eight minutes longer than the typical episode.
