"I think it's going to be imperative for us to get that dome rocking," said Smith in his pep talk to the faithful. The issue of a late-arriving home crowd has been a constant. For the home opener this year, the team was offering pregame discounts on food and merchandise in an effort to lure fans into the building in time for the introductions. "We've seen some progress on that, but there is still a ways to go," said Jim Smith, the team's chief marketing officer.
"It frustrates me. Atlanta's always late for everything," harrumphed 790/the Zone's afternoon host Mike Bell, one of the local sports talk personalities who has wondered the loudest when Atlantans are going to go all in with these Falcons. There are plenty, however, who point to examples of a growing passion for the team. When Dan Reeves, the only coach to take the Falcons to a Super Bowl, dropped off some articles for his church's Christmas drive last week, he said he was peppered by parishioners with questions about the Falcons' future. Tight end Tony Gonzalez said he sensed a rising tide of support last week when out at a Buckhead bar and while out Christmas shopping. "People yelling, 'Keep it up,' from across the mall.
And those ratings have been steadily climbing as have the Falcons. Over the first six games carried by Fox, the average local rating was 20.8 (representing about 499,000 Atlanta area households viewing the game). Over the past six, the average was 25.3 (about 607,000 households). Jim Smith points to other indicators of interest: the increasing scarcity of tickets and a corresponding rise in prices on the "secondary ticket market" of online brokers, traffic on the team's website, merchandise sales. "This is the third year we've seen increases in each. We're going in the right direction," he said. There are several factors at play when trying to judge whether Atlanta is at the appropriate level of stark, raving nuts over a team that would light up plenty of other towns. There is the long history of failure with this franchise, a disappointment built into its DNA.
To Bell's way of thinking, the history at work against the Falcons is of more recent vintage. "There is still a segment of the fan base holding onto No. 7," he said. That, of course, is one-time Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, whose epic rise and fall in Atlanta is still regular grist for the talk show mill. The highlights of Vick mass producing the spectacular for Philadelphia - playing at an MVP level for a team that very possibly will be a postseason obstacle for the Falcons - rub at that old scab weekly. Atlanta already battles the reputation of being an ill-defined sports town, a place of transients who import their own allegiances, a place where the Braves don't sell out playoff games and the Hawks and Thrashers are constantly scuffling to put rear ends in seats.
Drawing upon the personality of their staid, steady coach, the Falcons are not going to attract people with their flamboyance. Aside from the occasional Twitter twaddle issued by receiver Roddy White, this team is extremely adept at not calling attention to itself. "You don't see them on a lot of TV shows or in a bunch of commercials or doing endorsements," Mathis said. "They are just not about any of that." This is a team that doesn't lead the league in any of the showy stats like passing, yardage, total defense (although White does lead the NFL in receiving yards). It specializes in those categories reserved for smart, grinding, fundamentally sound teams - the ones, as Mike Smith said, that are "maybe not as pretty as some of the other statistics."
In keeping with the conservative institutional philosophy, the team owner points out that the Falcons haven't done anything yet to warrant a parade down Peachtree. "We realize there is a lot of football left," he said. "We have work to do. I think one of the beauties of this team is that we all have a real sense of humility about where we are and what we've accomplished and are working hard to keep our own focus on the task at hand."
