The Father of the Bride says it Fittingly

Has it ever occurred to you that the father of the bride is like the best supporting actor in a play? Obviously the bride and groom are the leading lady and leading man on the day. The father of the bride, however, usually acts as the host even if the couple themselves contribute to the cost. It is the job of the father of the bride too to give away the bride, welcome guests and above all to give a speech that the couple should be able to remember fondly all the days of their lives.
Now nearly every father of the bride will do his best to avoid the general mayhem that takes place before a wedding. He will be quite happy to leave the lists and organisation to his womenfolk on the grounds that they will do it better than he would. It is rare that the father of the bride has trouble in being a welcoming and an affable host. He may not like dressing up but if his daughter wants a formal wedding he will even suffer wearing a dress suit. He may feel a trifle sad as he gives his daughter away but generally speaking that doesn't worry him either. The big worry for nearly every father of the bride is the wedding speech.
That is understandable. Most people never have to speak in public and most don't want to. Even a father of the bride who regularly has to give speeches at work will often find that it is a different matter entirely to give a father of the bride's speech. So he will be nervous and often, despite his best efforts, unprepared.
Speeches set the tone for the wedding. If they are light-hearted and relaxed the guests will be too. So the father of the bride should throw in a little sentimentality with a memory of the bride as a little girl. He should speak of his pride in her and all her achievements and mention some of them. He should make the groom and his parents a part of the big occasion and if he can tease the groom a little it will add to the speech. The father of the bride may mention her mother and how his daughter has inherited her wonderful traits. Finally his toast to the couple should be heartfelt and, if possible, very personal to the couple.
