The Best Man should Always have a Plan
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Be the best man you can be. That's the challenge a best man gets when he is given the privilege of supporting the groom on his big day. It's not just about turning up at the church or registry office or even remembering the ring. It's about being a good listener in the weeks beforehand. It's about helping with the arrangements. It's about making suggestions and doing whatever needs to be done.
A best man is usually a brother or a friend of the groom. If that is the case you will know the groom's family and be accepted as a helper. If, however, you are a colleague for instance you may need to do some research before the big day. Getting to know the groom's parents and the bride-to- be would be a good starting point so perhaps meeting for a drink or a meal would be a good idea. A good best man will find out any worries the groom or his family may have and help sort out any problems. He might, for instance do the legwork on where the best deal on wedding cars is to be had. He might act as spy in different hotels and tell the couple what the service was like. He might offer to collect the wedding suits or the flowers or arrange wedding insurance.
Every wedding is different and so are the challenges but the groom will be very relieved if you prove to be interested in what he is doing and if you make suggestions on how you can help. Very often the bride is the one who makes all those wedding lists. You can't obviously offer to send the invitations but you might be just the person to ensure that everyone has lifts or knows the way from the church or registry office to the reception. Being a best man is about being innovative and looking after the bridesmaids too of course!
The best man also has to give a speech. Whatever you do remember that what you say should enhance the day and make it special. So take time and write something more than the usual platitudes. Keep it light-hearted but never dirty.
Finally remember that you ARE the best man even if the bride thinks somebody else is. Make sure nobody is left out of things. Enjoy yourself. You'll set the tone for the wedding.
