When you get married it is the happiest day of your life. You and your new spouse hold each other and vow to never let that love end. Several years down the road you find yourselves arguing all of the time and the tension between you is almost unbearable. Something has got to give, but what? How do you save a broken marriage?
It seems almost hopeless to save a relationship that seems to be sinking fast. The first thing you will have to ask yourselves is if you both still want to be in the marriage. After all, saving a broken marriage is a lot of work and if only one of you wants to save it then all will fail.
Recognizing the problem
You cannot save a broken marriage when you don't know what to fix. Understanding what is wrong is crucial. Look through what you have been arguing about. There are many common reasons that pull couples apart.
Sexual betrayal: A marriage that has undergone this type of betrayal is hard to reconcile. You will both have to decide if you will want to resolve your issues. You can decide this by simply asking yourself if you are going to be able to get past the infidelity. If you are willing to move on then that is what you truly need to do. Many times a broken marriage cannot heal due to the fact that the person who has been betrayed has not really moved on and left the betrayal in the past. Bringing up all of the hurt that has been caused will not help. Have an initial conversation about what happened and then never bring it up again.
Money crisis: Money problems are the primary reason that people argue. In times of great financial strain it seems that married couples turn on each other either in frustration or resentment. The truth is that financial issues should bring a couple closer. You need to pull together and figure out a solution to the problems you are having. Make it into a project and it just may cause you both to reconcile.
Death in the family: Tragedy often causes a broken marriage. People who are grieving have a tendency to withdraw from everyone including their spouses. If this is an issue with the both of you then you may need couple's therapy. It could also help by discussing your feelings with each other. Try to remember that at one time in your marriage you were best friends. Who better to talk to than your friend?
You've gone in different directions: There are times when two people kind of drift away from each other. This is hard on any marriage. If this is the case of your marital problems then the best thing that you can do is reconnect with each other. Go away for a weekend and discover all of the reasons that you fell in love in the first place. Getting away from everyday life is sometimes a helpful way to put the spark back into your relationship.
No matter what the problems are saving a broken marriage is hard. Putting a lot of work and effort into retrieving your relationship is vital.
If you and your spouse still love each other then it is very important that you heal your relationship. Fixing a broken marriage takes two, and if you are both willing to try then you will surely be able to save it.
