New Study: Is Divorce Contagious?

There has been much discussion in recent months regarding whether getting divorced is actually proving to be contagious. Late life divorces in particular seem to be falling foul of the 'contagious' theory.
Statistics show that couples aged over 55 are now getting divorced more frequently- even though national divorce rates are starting to decrease. Around one fifth of divorces happen to people who have been married for twenty years or over.
According to the latest figures the main reason why women file for divorce is simply due to no longer feeling satisfied within the relationship whereas men tend to be filing for divorce mainly due to better prospects being made open to them. Around two thirds of all divorces in later life are filed for by women.
Nearly three quarters of people that initiate divorce later in life were happy that they had done so after. Due to people generally living for longer settling for an unhappy or unfulfilling relationship is becoming less and less desirable. People now wish to get more out of marriage.
It is common to sometimes feel like everybody around you is divorcing at one time but a new study shows that there may be some scientific explanation behind this. Scientist have concluded that they have linked one divorce in a family to opening the doors to more divorces.
Groups of friends have been identified as the most commonly affected in relation to 'contagious' divorced. When close friends divorce he or she may well talk of how it has improved their happiness prompting the married friend to question their own happiness. Co-workers have been identified as the second most common group for contagious divorces.
The main piece of advice given to older couples is to remain involved in one another's lives and not drift into leading separate lives. It is wise to try new hobbies and places to holiday together to keep the relationship interesting. It is important to keep the relationship fresh.
