After living with your life partner for so long, there might come a thing in life known as an "affair". After a life of shared experiences, raising kids and going through the good and bad times together, an affair is always devastating. After the affair, most people believe that the only solution is divorce. It may seem like the only option, but before opting for such a final solution, why not try another way. After all, you can get a divorce at any time. Why not try to salvage your marriage after the affair by making it better and stronger than the dysfunctional relationship you had before? Of course, both of you will have to agree to this for it to have any chance at working.
The most natural thing that people do after the affair is to confide in their friends and families. While this may be a natural impulse, it should be avoided at all costs. Your friends will always side with you and share your pain. They will almost never be objective and in fact, most will suggest/expect divorce to be your next step. If you must discuss this, get help from someone who will be objective and who will not reject your spouse if you end up repairing your marriage. Ultimately, it's up to you and your spouse. Do you want to salvage a relationship that you spent so much time developing? For many the answer will be no, but for some others, it will be worth a shot.
Let me give an example of the consequences of talking about the affair with your family. If you are in middle of repairing your relationship, it is very possible that a well meaning sibling or parent will treat your spouse negatively, making the road to conciliation even harder. And your family is not to blame. It is their way of protecting you from making what they believe is a mistake.
Let's assume that you and your spouse have worked things out and that you were able to reshape your marriage into a healthy, happy and fulfilling relationship. Every time your friends or family see your spouse, they will see a cheater. You may have long forgiven, but they will not. This will inevitably cause a strain that will have you making choices between your family, friends and spouse.
While it is natural to want to confide in friends and family after the affair, it is best NOT TO. Exercise restraint, and find someone that will listen without being judgmental. Taking the time to do this will make everything easier after the affair.
