You can find information about tennis dating back to hundreds of years ago. If you can believe it, this sport was played at first during religious ceremonies by monks. However, you would be surprised to know that when this activity first began, they used their hands to hit the ball. Athletes would have a difficult time doing that now.
As you can imagine, the hands were having a tough time keeping up with this activity, so they created leather gloves. However, this was still a difficult thing so they began using handles to strike the object. This was inevitably the first racket. Interesting.
If you can imagine this, the first ball ever used was wooden. That would definitely hurt if it hit you. Especially considering they used their bare hands as I previously mentioned. Years went on and many understood that this was not working, so they created a leather ball filled with bouncy material.
Tennis did not arrive in America until about 1874. It was played by the royals in France at first as a prestigious game. It was then called the "Game of the Palm". America fortunately got the patent for the equipment needed for this game and it was then born in the USA.
Sadly, women were not allowed to play the game for quite some time, however, that changed in approximately 1887. They created the US Women's National Singles Championship.
Many Americans are fans of the US Open, one of the greatest tournaments for this sport. These began in August of 1881, however it was only for men. In 1900, the US Nation Mens Double Championship came into existence.
Every sport has a scoring method and the same is with tennis. It dates back centuries. 60 was thought to be a complete number and is believed to be "game". It had 4 points in it. You could earn a fifteen, thirty, forty-five, or a sixty. Today it has been adapted and replaced the forty-five with a forty. It is thought that they copied the clock when creating this system.
At first, the courts were created inside and the men and women would have the ball bounced off the walls. The net was 3 feet in the middle and 5 feet on the sides. It has of course been changed today and you see what we have now.
Thankfully, tennis was created years ago and it has evolved to an amazing sport for athletes in the entire world. It gains a world of media attention and many individuals who excel.
