The Greatest Samurai (death in the bath house)
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Sokaku Takeda, a youthful fifty-two years old, settled back into the hot, soapy water. Sighing contentedly...he thought about his position. He had been called to this wild border town two weeks previously, but so far nothing at all had happened.
Where were all the brutal criminals who ran the smuggling and the gambling operations? There was lots of evidence of slave labor operations, but all he had seen so far were a pair of skinny tramps who had trailed him from a distance. Where were the gangs of thugs that burned police stations and terrified the constabulary so much that they had called for his sword?
Suddenly, as if in tune with his thoughts--CRASH! The doors to the bath house were slammed open and a half a dozen gangsters rushed into the room. Their swords were held in the ready position and they circled around the edge of the large bath.
At the first sound Sokaku had scrambled from the water. He grabbed the first thing that came to hand, which was a towel, and scowled at it. Fortunately, in his hands absolutely anything could be made into a potent weapon!
"We're going to teach you some manners," one fo the thugs snarled as he held his sword ready for the attack. Snarling insults, the rest of the gangsters began to move forward. They knew that if they could encircle the samurai, then they could rush him and kill him.
The old man didn't even have a sword in hand--he actually held a stupid towel--but his reputation was so great that none of the gangsters were willing to be the first to start the fray. He had, after all, killed dozens of skilled opponents, high able samurai, and the thugs were well aware that they were not samurai. So they planned to rush him with numbers and so kill him.
"So you dogs wish to teach me manners, eh?" Sokaku twisted the towel to make it more effective. He dipped the tip of the towel into the water.
Venting a terrible scream, one of the criminals dashed forward.. Sokaku moved to the side easily, his feet gripping the tiles firmly, and he flicked the towel like lightening. Whack--and the thug screamed in agony, grabbed his ribs, and fell to the floor in agony.
Two more thugs dashed towards the naked samurai. Whack! Crack!
Like a wraith Sokaku sidestepped, and he flicked his towel like lightening. Whack! Crack!
Moaning and holding their cracked ribs, five of the gangsters lay on the floor. The sixth gangster, seeing his fallen comrades, realizing that he was next, let loose his sword and ran out of the bath house. The only one left standing in the bath house now, Sokaku Takeda put the towel aside and and began to dress.
