Factors that Influence Selecting a Golf Putter
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Selecting a putter is not an easy task; it needs art as well as science. No putter can make a great golfer unless there is enough practice and skill. But when selecting a putter, one must have enough knowledge so that the golfing putter selected works with your style and also gives you the feel and sound that you desire.
Types of Putter Styles - Putter styles are of three types and each one has its own advantages. The modern blade putter is made replicating the early design which was used for putting. This style is usually left to the golfers who are highly skilled.
Karsten Solheim brought in the Pinger Anser putter in 1966. This has now become a modern standard for putters and the design is widely copied in many putters. This is a flange heel-toe weighted putter which has the advantage of more forgiveness and can be used easily when compared to the classic blade putter.
Another style, face-balanced mallet putter is the most forgiving of all the three styles of putters.
Moment of Inertia (MOI) - Moment of Inertia is the measure of an object to resist a change in its rotation. Much of the accuracy of a putter rests on its ability to not twist during impact.
The higher moment of inertia of the putter helps in reducing the putterface movement when the ball is hit off the center.
Shafting - The putter shaft enters the putter head either at the heel or the center. There are different types of Hosel design and shaft shape.
It is found that straight-in centered shaft putters are much better due to the reduced effect of twisting of the putter face they cause. This is the same principle that is used in the designing a hammer which has a shaft at the center of the head.
Cost - Cost must be the last factor that should be taken into consideration when selecting a putter. It is the type of putter that matters the most. In case you select a wrong putter, no matter at what price you have purchased it, it will be expensive. While, if you have selected a right putter, it is more useful than the more expensive clubs and hi-tech drivers.
Inserts - Many putters will have some type of insert. These inserts will provide a different feel to the putter over solid based putters. An insert should not affect your accuracy but may affect how the ball rolls.
Alignment Aids - Putting has a number of difficulties, one of which is aiming it in a correct way. There are a number of manufacturers now who mention that their putter has superior aiming aids.
With most marketing claims these should reviewed with a little skepticism. They may work for some people and not with others. Just take a moment to view the aides and see if they help you line with your aim. If not don't use them or select a different club.
