On one hand, the design of a go kart is relatively simple. It can, however, be a complicated building structure. Once you locate a reputable source for plans, look over the bill of material. The bill of material for this project can be specialized. The same thing is true of the tools you need. You may find that obtaining the materials and renting or buying specific tools is time consuming and expensive.
Experience in building vehicles or other machines is vital - if you haven't got this, it isn't advisable to try. You're going to be driving your completed go kart around a track at high speed; do you really trust yourself to build it? Building your own go kart can be an extremely risky business, so bear in mind the dangers that can come from it.
So, not only can the do it yourself go kart itself be an accident waiting to happen, the process of building it brings it own hazards. A first time go kart builder is at risk if they are not familiar with the construction skills required.
The cost and time commitment to build a go kart can be substantial. Usually, the amount spent on materials and tools adds up rapidly as you go through the building process. Finding a suitable engine alone can be expensive and time consuming.

Building your own go cart requires a large investment of time. Many of the construction components can't be finished in a short time. If you have any do-overs, you'll be spending your time undoing something, then redoing it. If the go kart breaks down, you'll be spending even more time doing repairs.
With all these disadvantages, why would you want to build your own go kart? It would be far easier, cheaper, safer and would mean a higher-quality product if you went out and bought one instead.
