The single most important sport with American fans, the NFL is alone among sports in being able to not only command the attention of the vast majority of US fans, but to hold their attention year-round, even during the off season. From the Super Bowl to the first of the preseason games, the NFL keeps fans interested.
Every professional sport holds a draft, but only the NFL draft is a weekend long event that gets millions of viewers, hour after hour. Held every April, the draft is talked about for months on end before it takes place. People guess which players will be drafted to which team, which team will emerge as the best, who will make a mistake and so on. Then for months after the draft, teams are judged, graded and evaluated on how they did.
The teams and players begin preparing for the draft almost the second the Super Bowl has concluded. Players announce their status as free agents and this keeps fans excited and the NFL in the headlines. Fans keep on the lookout for any news during the pre-draft season.
Fans are more interested in the upcoming NFL draft even as the NHL and NBA enter playoff season and the baseball season opens. All of these other big events in the sports world are overshadowed by the draft. In American sports, there is no other league which can stay at the forefront of the news and of the fan's minds all through the year like the NFL.
Once summer arrives, the training camps open and fans excitedly discuss how the teams are shaping up for the year and how the players seem to feel about their teams. This is also a time of year when fans argue over which players will be the starters for their teams.
NFL preseason games are nationally televised and even when these games star second-string and even third-season players, they draw huge audiences of fans starved for NFL action. The preseason games for no other sport draw this sort of attention; not basketball, not hockey, only the NFL.
Once the season proper begins, the excitement builds week after week. With only 16 weeks in the regular season, each game takes on great importance. The NFL is popular enough that the league is discussing the possibility of lengthening the season, something which fans are eager to see - but regardless, the closer the arrival of the postseason, the greater the excitement of fans and the higher the viewership.
Only the NFL has the kind of dedicated following that leads to an intense year round interest in the sport. Those who only see a few games a year are often unaware of the happenings with their favorite teams and often even who I son the roster that year! Being a serious NFL fan is a full time, year round job - and only the NFL can boast of fans who stay tuned all through the year.
