The Beach Boys: From Then Until Now
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Everyone knows who the Beach Boys are, whether you have followed the group since their debut in 1961 or are just familiar with a few of their songs - you are more than likely able to recognize them when you hear their songs. However, the history behind this group is a success that you do not hear too often in the music industry.
The Beach Boys were formed by family members, three brothers - Carl, Dennis and Brian Wilson - along with their cousin Mike Love and pal Alan Jardine. To start with Brian Wilson was not only the songwriter for the Beach Boys, he was also their producer. That was until his father, Murry Wilson jumped in on the boys' fame in early 1962 - when he became the producer and publicist.
The Beach Boys developed their unique sound based on the influence of Chuck Berry and his feel good music. Their sound is often called surf rock or psychedelic rock. When they first released their debut single "Surfin'" in 1961, the song went straight to number 75 on the top one hundred charts. More of their highly recognisable fun sounding hit singles are: Good Vibrations, Surfin USA, Barbara Ann, when I grow Up To Be A Man, Do You Wanna Dance and my all time favourite Sloop John B.
With Murry Wilson as their manager and publicist, The Beach Boys produced four albums within their first year and a half which included ten number one hits! By 1963 the Beach Boys had signed a recording contract with Capitol Records and became a household name in the music industry. Since their beginning, they have truly taken the world by storm and now, over fifty years later, the Beach Boys are still rocking and performing sold out concerts across the globe!
The line up in 2012 is Brian Wilson, Al Jardine, Mike Love, David Marks and Bruce Johnston. There are not too many, if any, other groups that have lasted this long with three out of five of the same members as they started with.
Whether it is because they were family or just dedicated musicians, the world has grown to not only love but appreciate the music and talent of the Beach Boys, passing their music down from generation to generation. At their peak in the mid 60s the Beach Boys were the only US group who could come close to challenging the Beatles as far as commercial appeal. They were often nicknamed 'America's Band' and many believe that they were Americas first and best rock band.
This year the Beach Boys will be on tour from April 24-August 4, without Brian Wilson and Alan Jardine. This year's tour will include cities all over the United States including the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Other stops on the tour include Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Arizona and of course Atlanta, GA. The Beach Boys will continue to perform in each city for a few days before gracing the world with their presence and musical sounds. As anyone who has ever experienced a Beach Boys concert live or even televised, you already know what an amazing performance this band puts on. They truly transfer their passion and love for music into the crowd - making it worth every penny for the ticket purchase!
