If you choose to buy a golf rulebook, you may be shocked at the quantity and the technicality of some of them. There are rules for just about any circumstance you may encounter in a game of golf, and some that seem to cater for obscure and unheard-of situations too. You will need to learn the rules of the specific course as well. This may be based on dress code and out of bounds rules.
No matter how technical or ridiculous a rule may seem, you must understand that all the rules are based on the objective of fair play. The idea is that no-one should have an unfair advantage over another player, or be able to take any advantage other than the one that they gain by playing well. As a beginner or amateur, you will not be expected to learn the entire rule book back to front, but you will need some basic idea before you start playing.
The first four rules that every golfer should know, no matter what level of play they are at are:
1. The ball that you tee up is the ball you must play all the way to that hole, unless another stated rule allows for a substitution.
2. Make sure that the ball that you are playing is in fact, your ball. Mark your ball with something unique.
3. Play the ball where it lies. (Do not kick or push the ball to a more idea spot.)
4. You will have three options if you have an unplayable ball. Those are: playing from where you took the last shot, dropping a ball within two club lengths of where the ball is now, or keeping the point where the ball is between you and the ball. All three will give you a one shot penalty.
There are other rules about sharing clubs and how many you can have in your bag. You will get to know them the more you play, but be aware that different golfers may have a different approach to the rules than others. Some golfers are sticklers while some are very lax. Check with more experienced golfers before you bend a rule. Cheating is frowned upon by everyone.
You should also learn how to score. This will especially help you if you plan to enter a competition. Different scoring systems will be used in different competitions, so read up!
As in any game, cheating will only hurt yourself. Your game won't get any better if you cheat, no matter the prize in the clubhouse that night. You will never increase your good days by cheating.
Golf is a gentleman's game, and should be played with manners, graciously and with good sportsmanship. The rules are in place to help everyone, including the experienced ones. This will only hurt your golf game.
