There are different theories on the way that children develop, however, the views of Piaget are the most recognized. Everyone would agree that each child develops at a different rate, and even Piaget had to admit that this was the flaw to his theory. Transitions between the stages were not as smooth as he first anticipated them to be. Others would challenge his theory based on the fact that other factors needed to be accounted for in development of cognitive skill, such as, social environment, economic standing, and family. The theory divides development in four stages from the ages of birth to adulthood. The first stage includes ages birth to two. Coordination is one of the most important developments in this stage, especially between the hands and eyes. Object permanence is important to have a grasp on before this stage is complete. The also develop the ability to learn to some level cause and effect.
Toys for the hands are very important through the first part of this stage. Work into puzzles that will begin to develop memory and logic to develop abilities that will become important later. There are many different types of software available for children at these ages to learn interesting things in fun ways, and to develop alphabet recognition.
The ages of two through seven represent the preoperational stage. This is when curiosity and reasoning begin to establish themselves. The child can create magical worlds when playing, but they still do not associate different points of view with their own. They are developing language skills through this stage rapidly.
Toys that encourage creativity and adventure would be excellent for this stage of play. Dress up toys or toys that allow children to act out favorite characters and experience different points of view and scenarios. Dolls and puppets will allow expression of feelings from another point of view. Healthy computer games that allow role play would be excellent in this age period.
The third stage is the concrete operational stage, and last between the ages of seven and eleven. Many important changes take place in this stage of development such as, sorting objects, relationship recognition, classification of sets of objects, problem solving that involves multiple issues, the ability to comprehend that things can be changed and then put back in the same way, and conservation.
Wooden toys for this stage need to promote logic skills. Enhanced puzzles and problem solving should be encouraged. Language and math software would be appropriate. Language is one of the skills that children are rapidly developing all through this period. Puzzles of any type for the age and word or puzzle books can be taken on trips for bored periods.
The range from eleven to adult is known as the formal operational stage. In the beginning of the stage abstract thinking is a large part and children begin to learn to apply information that they have learned to experience. Problem solving is enhanced through to adulthood and the ability to understand love is learned in this stage.
An important task at this stage is not to allow a child to begin to isolate from the family. Purchase toys that encourage family involvement. There are many great board games on the market that can be a lot of fun for everyone. Sport type toys will be important and try to involve the family as well. Skill games like chess, and fun games of checkers are great problem solving games.
