What is called today West coast swing originated from dance styles from the 1920's in New York. Swing dancing and jazz music grew up together and many believe that jazz influenced this style of dance to a large extent because these dance moves were based on impromptu dance steps. The dances were fun to watch and quickly became part of the mainstream culture.
Swing was influenced greatly by jazz music and band leaders started to play music that encouraged dancers to move to the impromptu beat of the jazz musicians. This dancing style was at first shunned by the professional dance associations but today it is embraced by most ballroom dance schools. It is even one of the most popular forms of dance competitions in the most sophisticated dance contests.
Dance instructors discovered that advanced forms of this New York based dance were too difficult for beginning dance students so a simplified version was taught. The result was the west coast style which was easier for the beginning dance student to learn. Today this is one of the most popular forms of dance in the country.
Clothes have always been a large part of this dance movement. There was a need for clothes that allowed free movement because of all the athletic moves required in this style of dancing. Short skirts and baggy pants were the normal style on dance floors for many decades.
Many changes have taken place as far as dance clothes are concerned because ballroom dancers have accepted swinging. The swinging contestants can be seen wearing long evening dresses and formal tuxedos while doing their dance routine. But on a Saturday night at the local dance hall dance enthusiasts can be seen wearing period clothes from the thirties and forties.
Flowing skirts and baggy pants can be seen on many dance floors where dancers move to the swinging beat. Dressing for the dance, for these enthusiasts, is half the fun. Watching these artful dancers is like returning to a time when dance was king. From the looks on these dancer's faces one can easily see that they are having a great time on the dance floor.
