Top Chef is the American reality competition show that airs within the cable television network Bravo, in which chefs compete against one another in culinary challenges. They are judged by the panel of professional chefs and other notables from the meal and wine industry with a number contestants eliminated in every episode. The show is created by Magical Elves Productions, the same company in which created Project Runway.
The show has made three spin-offs: Top Chef: Masters, featuring established, award-winning chefs, Top Chef: Just Desserts, featuring pastry chefs, and Top Chef Europe. One more spin-off is actually planned: Top Chef Junior, featuring contestants in their early teens.
Each episode of Best Chef, save for the end, has had two challenges.
In the Quickfire Challenge, each chef is questioned to cook a plate with certain requirements (as an example, using specific ingredients or inspire a certain taste) or attend a culinary-related challenge (for example, a mise en place relay or a taste test). They are usually given 1 hour or less to total these tasks. A guest judge selects more than one chefs as the best from the challenge. Early in the period the winning chef(azines) are granted immunity through the following Elimination Challenge. As the number of contestants dwindle not a soul receives immunity and rather the winner gets another "reward" (for instance being team captain for any team challenge). To emphasis the culture and environment of the sixth season's setting, the show introduced "high-stakes" Quickfires, which would occasionally replace an everyday Quickfire. These differed by having an extravagant additional prize at stake for the winner (usually a big cash prize). Alternatively the stakes of the challenge could also involve anyone at the very base being sent home even prior to the elimination challenge. High-stakes Quickfires would go on onward in further months.
In the Elimination Concern, the chefs have to prepare more than one dishes to meet task requirements. Many of these are individual challenges and might require several courses, although some instances require teams to complete the challenge. Teams may be selected from the remaining contestants among themselves, but more often are selected because of the random process of "drawing knives" at a butcher's block, with the team identification revealed on the blade of the chef's knife. The chefs may have from some hours to a few days to complete this challenge. Ingredients for Elimination Challenges usually are limited to what is present in the "Top Chef" pantry and what the chefs purchase in a food store, with a possibly confined budget.
