WoW Mage Leveling Guide
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
The Mage is the king of burst DPS in World of Warcraft and are desired by most groups due to their damage output, intelligence buff, and the ability to provide health and mana regenerating food and drink.
When comparing a Mage to other classes, you'll notice that Mages definitely lacks something when it comes to hit points. The are also far more limited in their fighting than other classes such as Warlocks and Hunters who have pets, the ability to heal themselves when hurt (Priests, Shaman, and Druids), they don't even have heavy armor like Paladins and Warriors do. What the Mage has is control In order to successfully level a Mage you'll need to learn how to master this.
Mages, like all other WoW classes have three skill trees. For Mages, the skill trees are Arcane, Fire, and Frost. Frost is the skill that has most control out of the three. Arcane and Fire both lack a lot in terms of control but can be devastating for opponents.
While frost may not give you the massive hit that Arcane and Fire can, you will have a lot more control of the situation. Some talents allow your chill effects to actually freeze the target for a short time, you can also increase the time the chill lasts for and stun your target. Frost can be very effective to use when levelling solo.
One tactic that work extremely well when leveling Mage's is to go to an area where there are a lot of mobs (best if they're green to you). Gather them in and once you're surrounded let them have your Frost Nova. This will keep them in one place which will allow you to do massive damage when you follow up with your Blizzard. This tactic is a personal favorite of mine and it works really well.
I know there are those who are going to say that you should be doing mobs your own level but I beg to differ. Let's play out two separate scenarios.
In scenario 1 lets assume that I'm going into a zone where the mobs are all the same level as me. They hit hard which mean I'm going to be forced to take them our one by one. I will get more hit points for each one I kill as they are my own level but I'll have to work harder and longer to kill them. Let's assume I get 200 experience points for each kill and I can kill roughly 20 in an hour. My total experience gained would be 4000.
In the second scenario I'm facing mobs that are green towards me. This time I can take on 5 at a time so I round them up, use Frost Nova, and then Blizzard to kill them. This mob would give me roughly 100 experience points each. I should be able to kill 5 of these in the same time it took me to kill 1 in scenario 1. That'll leave me with 500 experience points every 3 minutes coming to a total of 10,000 and hour. Don't forget that I've looted each mob here as well which will definitely earn me a heap more than just fighting 1 same level mob at a time.
At first glance leveling a mage may seem like a tough process. Especially give that they lack a lot of the abilities that other classes have. But if you take the time to master the art of control you have a massive advantage in that you can wipe out many creatures in short time periods.
