You Can Save Loads by Building a Chicken Coop

If you're just starting to keep chickens or you're enlarging your flock, a great way to save money is to try building a chicken coop yourself. Although there are some good ready-made coops available they are expensive, and building a chicken coop is not hard " especially if youve got a good set of plans and instructions to follow.

Its a great family project too. Depending on the ages of your children, they will be able to help building the chicken coop by doing something: fetching and organising the materials, telling you what to do next, assembling some of the pieces or even building the entire chicken coop.

So, what kind of chicken coop will work best for you? For a small flock of three hens, try a chicken ark.

Chicken arks can be moved each day so the chickens get fresh ground to graze, or you can leave them in one place and let the chickens out. A chicken ark is a simple triangular shape with a nest box and roosting space at one end and a run at the other. Building a chicken ark is a simple project that would take a day to build.

A larger hen house with a run is more like a weekends work, but still based on simple shapes, so easy to build. This is your answer if you have five to seven hens. You could even build both a hen house and an ark, so you have the chicken ark to move the hens around and to use if any of them are poorly.

If you have, or plan to have, a larger flock then you will need a bigger hen house. A pitched roof design with external nest boxes would be perfect and you could site it within a run if you are not able to let your chickens free range.

There are good plans that include all three designs which are the obvious choice if you really want to save.
